# Is Fluxer federated? Federation and polyproto

Not yet. Federation is on Fluxer's roadmap as an experimental draft in 2026 and a stable release in 2027, will always be optional, and will be built on polyproto, not Matrix.

Fluxer isn't federated yet. Each instance, including fluxer.com, is separate, and an account on one instance can't join communities on another. Federation is item 3 on our [Roadmap 2026](https://fluxer.com/blog/roadmap-2026.md), with an experimental draft planned for 2026 and a stable release in 2027, and each instance will always be able to choose whether to turn it on.

## Is Fluxer federated or decentralized?

Not today. Fluxer is open source, so anyone can [run their own instance](https://fluxer.com/help/self-hosting-fluxer.md), but instances don't talk to each other, and no federation code has shipped yet. Once it arrives, each instance can choose whether to turn it on, and every instance will keep working without it.

## Is Fluxer based on Matrix?

No. Fluxer has its own API and real-time gateway, and when federation comes, we'll build it on polyproto-core, the base specification of [polyproto](https://polyproto.org/), with our own extensions.

## Why polyproto and not Matrix?

The main reason is that a Fluxer community will be stored only on the instance that hosts it, while every Matrix server with a member in a room keeps its own copy of that room. That choice has [trade-offs](https://fluxer.com/help/is-fluxer-based-on-matrix.md), and the roadmap gives [all our reasons](https://fluxer.com/blog/roadmap-2026.md).

## When is federation coming?

The roadmap plans an experimental draft that you can try in 2026 and a stable release in 2027, and we don't have exact dates yet. The draft will be a pull request in the open source Fluxer software, and we'll say in our [patch notes](https://fluxer.com/blog.md) when it's ready to try. We discuss federation in [Fluxer Labs](https://fluxer.gg/fluxer-labs), our community, and anyone can join.

## Will one account work across instances?

Yes, that's the plan. With [polyproto-core](https://fluxer.com/blog/roadmap-2026.md), the instance with your account will give you an identity in the form name@domain, and you'll use it to sign in to communities on other instances without having to make a separate account on each of them.

## Will I be able to move my account to another instance?

That's the plan too, because [moving your account to another instance](https://fluxer.com/blog/roadmap-2026.md) is part of polyproto-core, the base specification that Fluxer's federation will be built on.

Your address will change to the new instance's domain, and while your old instance is online, your old account will be able to redirect to the new one, and you'll be able to export your data there and import it on the new instance. Messages you posted on other instances will stay where they are, and you'll be able to re-sign them with your new identity.

## What can I do before federation is out?

You can [run your own Fluxer instance](https://fluxer.com/help/self-hosting-fluxer.md) today and invite people to make accounts on it, and you can [export your data](https://fluxer.com/help/data-export.md) from your account at any time.

## Can I already use accounts on several instances?

Yes, although it works differently from federation. The [desktop and mobile apps](https://fluxer.com/help/apps.md) can sign in to accounts on fluxer.com and on self-hosted instances at the same time, and you can switch between them. Each account still belongs to its own instance.
