# How to format messages on Fluxer

Markdown in Fluxer: bold, lists, code blocks, tables, spoilers, timestamps, alerts and more, with what to type for each one.

You format a Fluxer message by typing Markdown around your text, and the same syntax works in the web app, the desktop app and the iOS and Android apps.

## Does Fluxer support Markdown?

Yes. Type these around your text to format it.

| Type this | To get |
| --- | --- |
| `**bold**` | **bold** |
| `*italic*` or `_italic_` | *italic* |
| `***bold italic***` | ***bold italic*** |
| `__underline__` | underlined text |
| `~~strikethrough~~` | ~~strikethrough~~ |
| `` `code` `` | `code` |
| `[link text](https://fluxer.com)` | [link text](https://fluxer.com/index.md) |
| `\*not italic\*` | \*not italic\* |

A backslash before a symbol shows the symbol itself. To hide text as a [spoiler](https://fluxer.com/help/spoiler-tags.md), put two vertical bars on each side of it, and people click the spoiler to reveal it.

## How do I add headings, lists and quotes?

Start a line with one of these.

| Start a line with | To get |
| --- | --- |
| `# `, `## `, `### ` or `#### ` | a heading, from largest to smallest |
| `-# ` | small, dimmed text |
| `- ` or `* ` | a bulleted list |
| `1. ` | a numbered list |
| `> ` | a quote of that line |
| `>>> ` | a quote of that line and every line after it |

Put two spaces before `- ` to nest a list item under the item above it in the list. Each of these needs a space after the symbols, so `#hashtag` stays plain text.

## How do I write a code block?

Put three backticks on the line before and the line after your code. Add a language after the first three backticks, such as `js`, `py` or `rust`, and the app colors the code for that language. With `ansi`, the app shows terminal color codes as colors.

````
```py
print("Hello")
```
````

## Can I make a table?

Yes. Separate the columns with vertical bars and put a line of dashes under the header row. Tables show in messages, threads and forum posts in every Fluxer app.

```
| Day | Time |
| --- | --- |
| Saturday | 18:00 |
```

## Does Fluxer render LaTeX math?

Yes. Code blocks marked `latex`, `tex` or `katex` show as math, and a math block has [a size limit](https://fluxer.com/help/messaging.md). Math between dollar signs in a line of text isn't supported.

## Where doesn't formatting work?

Messages in channels, threads, forum posts, DMs and group DMs support everything on this page. The "About me" text on a profile supports text formatting, links, lists and quotes, but it doesn't support headings, code blocks, small text, tables or alerts.

- [How do I make Markdown alerts in Fluxer chat?](https://fluxer.com/help/markdown-alerts.md) An alert turns a quote in your message into a colored box with an icon and a title, such as a warning or a tip.
- [How do I post a time that shows in everyone's time zone?](https://fluxer.com/help/message-timestamps.md) Each reader sees the date and time you post in their own time zone, language and clock format on any device.
