# Is Fluxer an Electron app?

Fluxer's desktop app is built with Electron and shares its code with the web app. Electron doesn't make an app slow on its own, and we keep making Fluxer faster.

Fluxer's desktop app for Windows, macOS and Linux is built with Electron, and it runs the same code as the web app at [fluxer.com](https://fluxer.com/app). Our iOS and Android apps are native apps built with Flutter. We've started work on a desktop version of that app with the working name [Fluxer Lite](https://fluxer.com/help/fluxer-lite.md), for people who want a desktop app without Electron.

## Which parts of Fluxer use Electron?

Only the desktop app uses Electron, a framework that puts the Chromium browser engine and Node.js together into a desktop program. Our desktop app and web app are the same React and TypeScript app, and the code for both is [open source](https://fluxer.com/help/open-source.md) on GitHub.

In the desktop app, the interface comes with the app and loads from your computer, and it updates in separate modules from pkgs.fluxer.com without a full reinstall. This version of the desktop app [became stable](https://fluxer.com/blog/patch-notes-2026-10-16.md) on Windows, macOS and Linux in October 2026.

The [iOS and Android apps](https://fluxer.com/help/apps.md) don't use Electron. They're native apps built with Flutter, and their code is also open source on GitHub, in the [fluxerapp/flutter_client](https://github.com/fluxerapp/flutter_client) repository.

## Are Electron apps always slow?

Using Electron doesn't make an app slow on its own. Every Electron app brings its own copy of Chromium and Node.js, and that copy takes up memory before the app does anything. How fast the app feels depends mostly on its own code. The Electron team's performance guide tells developers that "performance is largely your responsibility".[^electron]

Slack kept Electron when it rebuilt its desktop app in 2019, and it said the new app launched 33% more quickly and used up to 50% less memory.[^slack][^techcrunch] Slack's old app ran a separate Electron process for every workspace you were signed in to, and the new app didn't.[^techcrunch]

## What does Fluxer do to keep the app fast?

We work on performance in every Fluxer app and fix slow spots in our regular updates, and we'll keep doing that. These are some recent changes from our patch notes.

- In the web and desktop apps, typing a message of 2,000 to 4,000 characters is [2 to 8 times faster](https://fluxer.com/blog/patch-notes-2026-11-01.md), and some unusual messages format up to 90 times faster.
- When your connection drops, the apps [reconnect faster than before](https://fluxer.com/blog/patch-notes-2026-10-16.md), especially when lots of other people are reconnecting at the same time as you.
- In the desktop app on Windows 10, we [fixed Alt+Tab](https://fluxer.com/blog/patch-notes-2026-10-16.md), the volume pop-up and the Start menu lagging while you were sharing a single window in a call.
- In the desktop app on Linux, we [fixed screen sharing with audio](https://fluxer.com/blog/patch-notes-2026-10-24.md) starting a new PipeWire thread every couple of seconds until the app slowed down.
- The iOS and Android apps [use less memory than before](https://fluxer.com/blog/patch-notes-2026-10-16.md), especially on Android, and channel lists load faster when you switch between communities.

If the app runs slowly on your computer, please [report it as a bug](https://fluxer.com/help/report-a-bug.md) and tell us your device, your operating system and your Fluxer version, and we'll look into it.

## Does Fluxer run on low-end computers?

You can use Fluxer on a low-end computer, and if yours has little memory, the [web app](https://fluxer.com/app) in a browser you already have open doesn't start a second browser engine. In "Accessibility" settings, you can also [turn on reduced motion](https://fluxer.com/help/accessibility.md) and choose when GIFs, animated emoji and stickers play. Fluxer also runs on phones and tablets with our [mobile apps](https://fluxer.com/help/apps.md).

[Fluxer Lite](https://fluxer.com/help/fluxer-lite.md) will be a separate desktop app that doesn't run its own browser engine. It isn't out yet and has no release date, and we haven't measured how much memory it uses.

## Does Fluxer slow down my games?

The desktop app does less work while it's minimized or closed to the tray, because it slows down its own timers and animations, and like any app it still uses memory and CPU while you play. While you're streaming your screen or a game, it keeps running at full speed. The app also keeps at most [192 MB of recent images](https://fluxer.com/blog/patch-notes-2026-10-16.md) in memory (RAM).

On Windows, the app raises its own priority and the priority of its graphics work only while you're streaming, to keep your stream smooth, and puts them back when you stop.

## Is Fluxer getting a native desktop app?

We're building [Fluxer Lite](https://fluxer.com/help/fluxer-lite.md), a native desktop app, as a separate download for people who want an app without Electron. The Electron desktop app stays fully supported and keeps getting updates, and Fluxer Lite won't replace it. We have [no plans to rewrite](https://fluxer.com/help/will-fluxer-rewrite-in-rust.md) our web and desktop apps in Rust, and most of our backend services already use Rust.

## Can I mod the desktop app?

You can mod Fluxer's desktop app, which runs on web code you can read and change, and [modding stays allowed](https://fluxer.com/help/third-party-clients.md) as long as you don't use it to [harm other people or the service](https://fluxer.com/help/are-third-party-clients-allowed.md). Themes and "Quick CSS" are built into the desktop app, and Ctrl+Shift+I, or Cmd+Option+I on macOS, opens the developer tools. [Here's how to mod Fluxer](https://fluxer.com/help/mod-fluxer.md).

A compiled native app is much harder to inspect or change, and Discord's new Rust app [won't work with today's client mods and CSS themes](https://fluxer.com/help/discord-rust-app-client-mods.md). Fluxer Lite will be compiled too, and because [its code is open source](https://fluxer.com/help/fluxer-lite.md), you'll be able to change it and build it yourself.

## Is Discord dropping Electron?

Discord's co-founder and CTO, Stanislav Vishnevskiy, said on November 4, 2026 that Discord is moving its whole app to Rust and that Electron goes away.[^cto] We explain [what he said](https://fluxer.com/help/discord-rust-rewrite.md) and [how to compare the two apps when Discord's new app is out](https://fluxer.com/help/will-discord-be-faster-than-fluxer.md).
