Will Fluxer be on F-Droid and other Android app stores?

Not yet. We plan to publish the Fluxer Android app on F-Droid and Accrescent for the full release, and you can install it without Google Play from our download page.

The Fluxer Android app isn't on F-Droid or Accrescent yet, and we plan to publish it in both for the full release, but we haven't set a date. Until then, you can install the Android app from our Android download page or with Obtainium, or join the Google Play beta.

Is Fluxer on F-Droid?

No, the Fluxer Android app isn't on F-Droid yet. You can get it without Google Play from our Android download page, which has two builds of the app. One build is for phones with Google Play services, and the other is for phones without them.

Will Fluxer be on F-Droid?

Yes, we plan to publish the Android app on F-Droid for the full release, but we haven't set a date. The Android app is open source on GitHub under the AGPL-3.0 license. The build for phones without Google Play services is the one that fits F-Droid's rules, because it doesn't include Firebase or Google Play billing and gets notifications through UnifiedPush.1

What does F-Droid need from an app?

Every app on F-Droid has to be free and open-source software, and F-Droid builds each app itself from its public source code. F-Droid doesn't allow proprietary libraries such as Google Play services and Firebase, and an app that uses them needs a build without them.2

F-Droid normally signs the apps it builds with its own signing key. If F-Droid can build an app that matches the developer's own APK exactly, which is called a reproducible build, it can publish the developer's own APK with the developer's signature.3

Android only installs an update that's signed with the same key as the app you have. If F-Droid signs Fluxer with its own key, you would have to uninstall a Fluxer build that you got from somewhere else before you can install the one from F-Droid.

F-Droid also marks some apps with warnings that it calls anti-features, for example when an app tracks you or when it needs a network service that isn't free software. An app with an anti-feature label can still be listed and installed on F-Droid.4

How is IzzyOnDroid different from F-Droid?

IzzyOnDroid is a separate repository from F-Droid's own, and you can add it to the F-Droid app and to other apps like it. It publishes the APKs that developers build and sign themselves, and it doesn't build apps from source the way F-Droid does.5 Its apps have to be free and open source too, and it usually allows up to 30 MB per app.6

We plan to publish the Android app in F-Droid's own repository. Each Fluxer APK is about 100 MB or larger, which is more than IzzyOnDroid usually allows.

Will Fluxer be on Accrescent?

Yes, we plan to publish the app on Accrescent for the full release as well. Accrescent is an Android app store focused on security and privacy. Developers sign their own apps, and Accrescent checks each app's signing key when you first install it.7 Accrescent is still in alpha, and on GrapheneOS you can install it from the GrapheneOS App Store.8

Can I install Fluxer without Google Play?

Yes. Our Android download page has the Android app from GitHub, including the build for phones without Google Play services. That build gets notifications through UnifiedPush, and you need a UnifiedPush distributor app on your phone to get them.

Obtainium is an open-source app that installs apps from their release pages, such as GitHub, and tells you when there's an update for them.9 The download page has a button that adds each Fluxer build to Obtainium. If you download an APK file yourself instead, it doesn't update by itself, so you have to download every new version yourself.
