Client mods and CSS themes made for Discord today won't work in its new desktop app, because they change the JavaScript and CSS of Discord's Electron app. The new app draws its interface with compiled Rust code.12 As of November 5, 2026, Discord hasn't said anything about whether mods or themes will work in its new desktop app.
In the new desktop app, that ends the ways people declutter and customize Discord with mods, from hiding cosmetics, upsells and Quests to their own themes, fonts and accessibility tools. That works in favor of Discord's advertising business, and you can read what it means for your control over Discord and the short answer on client mods.
Will Vencord and BetterDiscord work with Discord's new app?
The desktop versions of Vencord and BetterDiscord won't work with the new app, because they install by changing files in Discord's Electron app. Vencord puts its own file in place of the app's starting file and keeps Discord's original next to it.3 Its docs say its patches "are RegExp replacements applied to Discord's JavaScript code at runtime."4 BetterDiscord's installer writes its own index.js file into Discord's app folder.5
Discord's co-founder and CTO, Stanislav Vishnevskiy, wrote on November 4, 2026 that "Electron goes away" and that the new app uses GPUI, a Rust UI framework from the makers of the Zed code editor.1 In GPUI, an app sets its colors, sizes and layout in Rust code that is compiled into the app, as the example on the GPUI website shows.2
A NixOS maintainer who packages Discord wrote in a tracking issue that the "Electron injection and ASAR replacements" of Vencord, Equicord, OpenAsar and moonlight won't work with the new app. The issue says the same about the BetterDiscord installer and discocss, a small tool that adds your own CSS to Discord's desktop app.6
Which Discord mods and themes are affected?
Every mod that changes Discord's Electron app is affected, including these:
- Vencord adds plugins and themes to Discord's desktop app.
- Equicord is a fork of Vencord with more plugins.
- BetterDiscord loads plugins and CSS themes and has its own library of add-ons.
- Replugged is a mod that was first based on Powercord.
- moonlight and shelter are two more mods with their own add-ons.
- OpenAsar replaces Discord's
app.asarfile and can add CSS and JavaScript.
CSS themes made for these mods are affected too, such as ClearVision, Midnight, system24, Catppuccin for Discord, Material Discord and DiscordRecolor, and themes from the BetterDiscord theme library such as Dark Matter and Frosted Glass.
Two older desktop mods had stopped before the announcement. Powercord's README says it "has reached EOL", and GooseMod's repository is archived.78
Discord's own themes, such as Dark, Onyx and the color themes in Nitro, are part of Discord's app.9 Discord hasn't said yet whether they will come to the new desktop app. Asked whether message components would look the same on desktop and mobile, Vishnevskiy replied that the new app "looks and works identically to the current one".10
Will Vesktop, Legcord and browser themes keep working?
Apps that load Discord's web version, such as Vesktop, Equibop, Legcord, GoofCord, WebCord and Dorion, depend on what happens to that version, and Discord hasn't said how its new web version will work with them. Vishnevskiy wrote about the web version that "We will have an HTML renderer for it, but logic will be WASM instead of JS."11
The NixOS maintainer expects these apps to "remain largely unaffected by the desktop rewrite, as long as the web client and the APIs they rely on stay compatible."6 WebCord's developer wrote on GitHub on November 5, 2026 that WebCord will keep following Discord's web version as long as Discord still has one.12
Vesktop comes with Vencord, and other apps here can load mods too.13 The mods in these apps patch the JavaScript of Discord's web version, and Vishnevskiy wrote that the logic of the new web version will be WebAssembly (WASM).411 These mods keep working until the new web version ships, and then there's no JavaScript left for them to patch.
CSS themes you add in a browser, for example with the Stylus extension, style the HTML of Discord's web version. Because the new web version still draws HTML, they might partly keep working, but Discord hasn't said what HTML its new renderer will use.
What about mobile mods like Revenge and Aliucord?
Mods for Discord's React Native mobile app, such as Revenge, Kettu and Valenced, change code that Discord says is going away. Vishnevskiy wrote that React Native goes away too, and that "mobile keeps native UI but shares app code with desktop via Rust."1
Aliucord is a mod for an older version of Discord's Android app, and its README says that version doesn't use React Native.14 Dropping React Native doesn't change it directly, and Aliucord keeps working only as long as Discord still lets that old version sign in.
Vendroid, a Vencord app for Android, loads Discord's web version, and it depends on the same open questions about the web version as Vesktop.15
Vendetta and Bunny had stopped before Discord's announcement. Vendetta's README on GitHub says "As of 06/02/24, Vendetta has been discontinued", and Bunny's GitHub repository is archived.1617 Revenge Next stopped on October 29, 2026, and its README says the work on it moved to a new mod called Valenced.18
What can you do with Discord mods and themes today?
Mods and themes let you change almost every part of Discord on your own computer. This is what people use them for today, mostly in the mods' own words, and none of it works in Discord's new desktop app. Discord's terms forbid using "any unauthorized software designed to modify the services", and you can read if Discord is killing client mods.
You can hide clutter and offers to buy things:
- Equicord's Declutter plugin "Cleans up Discord by removing non-essential UI elements like profile effects, shop tabs, boosts, and more", with switches such as "Remove quests above DMs list.", "Remove gift button." and "Remove nameplates."19
- Equicord's NoNitroUpsell plugin hides Discord's offers to buy Nitro, and its Questify plugin can "disable annoyances, or completely remove Quests".2021
- Vencord's NoPendingCount plugin removes the ping count that Discord shows next to "incoming friend requests, message requests, and nitro offers".22
- Other plugins hide the buttons in the chat bar, role headers in the member list, stickers, servers you rarely open and the channels in collapsed categories.222324
You can block tracking and keep more to yourself:
- Vencord's NoTrack plugin is always on, and its description is "Disable Discord's tracking (analytics/'science'), metrics and Sentry crash reporting".25 BetterDiscord's DoNotTrack "Stops Discord from tracking everything you do like Sentry and Analytics."24
- Vencord's ClearURLs "Automatically removes tracking elements from URLs you send", and its SilentTyping plugin can "Hide that you are typing".22
- Other plugins give the files you upload random names, hide some of your games and apps from your status or lock Discord behind a passcode.2224
You can make Discord look the way you want:
- Full CSS themes change every color, font, layout and background. As of November 5, 2026, BetterDiscord's most downloaded themes include ClearVision with over 2.8 million downloads, Dark Matter with 2.2 million and Frosted Glass with 1 million, and midnight, system24 and Catppuccin for Discord are popular on GitHub.26
- Themes can move the server list to the top, show servers as a grid, bring back Discord's look from 2016, swap its emoji for another style or make the app see-through.26
- Equicord's FontLoader "Loads any font from Google Fonts". Discord's own settings let you change the size of text but not the typeface.2327
- Plugins can show role colors on names everywhere, show usernames next to nicknames and highlight code blocks the way code editors like VS Code do.22
You can add accessibility tools that Discord doesn't have:
- The Dyslexia theme "makes the app more accommodating to people with dyslexia" by changing Discord's fonts, which Discord's own settings don't let you choose.2627
- Vencord's VcNarrator plugin "Announces when users join, leave, or move voice channels via narrator", and Equicord's VoiceMessageTranscriber plugin gives "On-device transcriptions for voice messages powered by Whisper".2223
- The Accessible Discord add-on for the NVDA screen reader needs a BetterDiscord plugin, and you can read what changes for screen readers.
- Discord already has its own settings for high contrast, reduced motion, text size and keyboard navigation, and these mods add what those settings don't cover.282729
You can add everyday tools:
- BetterDiscord's most downloaded plugin, CallTimeCounter, "Shows how much time you are in a voice chat", and it has more than 2.3 million downloads.24
- Other plugins translate messages, control Spotify, pin DMs to the top, put server folders in their own sidebar, open channels in tabs like a browser, show people's local time, schedule messages and let you turn a person's volume up past 200%.222324
You can make the app faster or change how media works:
- OpenAsar replaces part of Discord's desktop app. It promises "~2x faster startup times" and says it "can make your client feel snappier" as you scroll.30
- Plugins load images at their original quality, stop the CPU-intensive typing animation, turn down loud Spotify embeds and stop Discord from pausing your Spotify.2224
Discord calls Quests an ad format in its own help articles, and its settings let you turn off personalized Quests. You can also read how Discord makes money.
Discord's own "Data & Privacy" settings also have a "Use data to improve Discord" switch. Discord says that when you turn it off, it "will no longer collect new information about how you use and/or navigate Discord in order to understand and improve our products". Its help article also says that "the signals associated with your use of Discord continue to be sent, but we do not use the information for the purposes described above."31
Will people still see what changes in each Discord build?
Public datamining projects track Discord's builds today by comparing its JavaScript files, and a compiled Rust app is much harder to inspect. The Discord-Datamining project on GitHub says it compares "the JavaScript files served to the Discord Canary client" in each build, and it still adds new Canary builds several times a day.32
Accounts like DiscordPreviews on X post about features Discord is working on, for example a Game Mode setting in September 2026.33 The Discord-Datamining project also says features found this way may change and aren't guaranteed to come out.32
Are client mods allowed on Discord?
Discord's terms forbid using "any unauthorized software designed to modify the services", and they also forbid reverse engineering or decompiling its software without written consent unless the law permits it.34 Discord's official account wrote in 2019 that "BetterDiscord and other client modifications are not allowed, and are a violation of our Terms of Service. If you violate our ToS, you risk your account being disabled."35
Can I mod Fluxer?
Nothing in our terms or community guidelines forbids modifying our apps, and modding stays allowed as long as you don't use it to harm other people or the service. Our web and desktop apps stay on the web platform, with themes and custom CSS built in.
Fluxer's apps are open source, and anyone can read the code of each version. You can read how to theme and mod Fluxer, and you won't get banned just for using a modified app.
