What stops Fluxer from going the way of other chat apps?

Fluxer has no outside investors, its code is under the AGPL with no CLA, self-hosting is free, and our policies rule out ads and selling your data.

Fluxer has no outside investors. Its code stays open source under the AGPL license, and anyone can use it to run their own instance for free. fluxer.com is run by one company, Fluxer Platform AB, which its founder owns, and we plan to add optional federation so that people on different instances will be able to talk to each other.

Will Fluxer take venture capital?

Fluxer has no venture capital and no outside investors, and its founder Hampus has said on the Operator Pass page that he won't take venture capital. In his words, "Investors expect a return, and for chat apps that usually means showing ads or selling data." fluxer.com is funded by Plutonium subscriptions, the Operator Pass and donations.

Could Fluxer start selling data or showing ads?

Our privacy policy rules out ads and selling, renting or licensing your messages or any other personal data, as sections 3 and 4 say, and section 3.1 of our terms says we never use your content to train AI. Hampus has also said he won't take venture capital, because investors expect a return, and for chat apps that usually means ads or data sales.

Any change to our terms or privacy policy that leaves you worse off is announced before it takes effect, with the notice period in section 9.1 of our terms and section 15 of our privacy policy, apart from the exceptions they list. You can always export all your data and delete your account before the change applies to you, if you don't accept it.

How will end-to-end encryption limit what Fluxer can see?

End-to-end encryption is coming with no setting to turn it off, for voice and video calls in 2026 and for personal notes, DMs and group DMs as an experimental draft in 2026 and a stable release in 2027. Nothing on Fluxer is end-to-end encrypted today, and once each part is out, we won't be able to read or hand over the content it protects.

Which laws protect my data on fluxer.com?

Because Fluxer is run by a Swedish company, the GDPR covers your data on fluxer.com wherever it's stored. A government outside the EU can't enforce an order for your data against us without going through Swedish authorities. Until we move fluxer.com's stored data to our own hardware in Sweden, which we haven't set a date for yet, US authorities can also send orders to our US hosting provider, as our CLOUD Act article explains.

What if fluxer.com changes anyway?

The Fluxer software is open source under the AGPL v3.0 or later, and every published version stays available under that license. Fluxer has had no CLA since February 18, 2026, so contributors who have sent changes since then keep the copyright in that work, and Fluxer Platform AB has no right to relicense it under other terms without them.

Anyone can run their own instance for free with no license key, paid tier or reduced edition, and Fluxer staff can't ban anyone from an instance we don't run. The official desktop and mobile apps can connect to any instance. Optional federation, which would let people on different instances talk to each other and move their account from one instance to another, is planned as an experimental draft in 2026 and a stable release in 2027.
